From the past
Ancient teachings - Indian / Chinese / Middle Eastern and Greek have a lot to say about how you get whatever it is that you think you need. In modern lingo this is talked about as supply chain. One view of your supply chain looks like this:
- Who you take love, reassurance, nuturing and friendship from
- How, where and through whose hands you get the food you eat
- The damage you cause in meeting your needs.
How you look out for the people, creatures and the planet you live on makes a big difference too.
What they are telling us is - understand your supply chain and don't mess with it too much.
Your food supply
Take food for instance. Everyone knows that good quality food really helps. In the western cultures, consideration is pretty much confined to physical and biochemical concerns.
Looking to the east there are a bunch of other concerns that come into the picture. Like:
- How you earned the money that you paid for your food with. Did you work hard and in a fully focussed way for what you take?
- How the food you eat was produced. This has a subtle effect on your health. Were the rights of some person or creature harmed?
- Were the people that handled the food the sort of people that inspire you?
Drilling down into the money thing. The word "Dollar" comes from the Sanskrit word Tala. Tala means "measure". So if someone helped you out in a significant way then they might give you an amulet or jewellery piece for you to wear so that everyone could see that you are trustworthy and helpful.
Simple checklist
- Does your food supply come through people of integrity
- Do you give a good return for what you get
- Is anyone or anything harmed in the production of your food
- Are you taking more than you really need
